How to Mosaic a Photo? Cover Faces, Plates and ID Numbers in Seconds

Masking faces, licence plates and ID numbers before you post a photo is basic hygiene. Here is how to redact private details fast by dragging over the regions you want to hide.

Post a group photo in a chat and the bystanders in the background are in sharp focus, plates of parked cars included. Send a support ticket screenshot and the customer's phone number and address are right there. Once an image like that leaks, the cost of fixing it is far higher than spending a minute masking it beforehand.

What has to be covered

Common sensitive areas: faces you have no permission to publish, licence plates, ID numbers, bank card numbers, the name, phone number and address on a delivery slip, and the employee number on a badge. Blurring beats plain cropping — cropping can wreck the composition, while mosaic and blur keep the context.

How to do it: drag over the region

TwoThink's Mosaic / Blur Image lets you drag a rectangular region in the preview and apply a mosaic or a Gaussian blur to it. You can drag several regions — one for the face, one for the plate — and treat each separately. Everything is computed locally in your browser, and the file is never uploaded to any server.

Mosaic versus blur

  • Mosaic: blocks harder, good for ID numbers and QR codes
  • Blur: looks more natural, good for faces and bystanders

The strength is adjustable, but do not go too light: some deblurring tools can partially undo a mild blur, so for sensitive information use a mosaic strong enough to hold.

Combining it with other tools

If the image is huge, Compress Image or Resize Image first so the preview is easier to work with. Before sending the export on WeChat, run Remove Image Metadata so the shooting location does not travel with it. If you only need to show part of the frame, Crop Image can cut the sensitive area away (rectangular crops only).

My routine

Any photo with a third party in it → Mosaic / Blur Image first → Remove Image Metadata next → then send. The same applies to ticket and expense screenshots.

Try it → open Mosaic / Blur Image, grab a test photo with a plate or a face in it, drag over the area and see how the masking looks.
