Image Too Big to Send on WeChat? Three Compression Methods Tested
WeChat limits how large an image can be, and camera originals run into tens of megabytes. I tried three compression approaches and compared file size, quality and privacy.
I sent a client some real product photos and the original was 8.3MB; WeChat spun for half a minute and still refused to send it. I tried switching to JPG and I tried a different Wi-Fi network before realising: the problem was never the network, the file was simply too big. Below are the measurements I took with the same 6.2MB product image (your numbers will vary, but the trend holds).
Why WeChat seems to hang
WeChat caps the size of a single image; the exact limit depends on the current WeChat version. Phone photos are often 4000×3000 or larger, and an uncompressed JPG easily exceeds 5MB. Even if it sends, the recipient loads it slowly and it burns mobile data.
Three compression methods compared
Method 1: TwoThink browser compression (recommended)
Open Compress Image, drop the file in, pick a quality level, download. Everything happens locally in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.
Result: roughly 680KB at quality 75, with text and edges still readable; time: about 3 seconds.
Method 2: "compress on send" in the phone gallery
When picking images in WeChat you can tick "original" or accept the default compression.
Result: noticeably smaller files; downside: the compression settings are not under your control, and EXIF is still kept in some cases.
Method 3: a third-party app
One free tool was full of ads and wanted a sign-in before it would compress anything.
Result: a similar file size; downside: the image is uploaded to the cloud, and I am not comfortable with that for product shots or ID photos.
What to do after compressing
Before sending a file to a client or posting it publicly, run Remove Image Metadata as well, so GPS coordinates and device details do not leak. If it still feels too big, pair it with Resize Image and bring the long edge down to around 1920px, which usually shaves off more.
How to pick a level
- WeChat chat preview: quality 70–80 is usually enough
- The recipient will save and inspect it: around quality 85, or Resize Image moderately instead of crushing the quality
- Product shots in bulk: Compress Image accepts multiple files, so dozens can be processed at once
Try it → open Compress Image, drop in the oversized image that would not send, and see whether it can be squeezed down to a size WeChat sends without trouble.
